Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about M-PESA Paybill fees, limits, and best practices

Do paybill charges vary by business or institution?

No. Safaricom applies a uniform paybill tariff table to all businesses using the Business Tariff model (most common). Your fee depends only on the amount band, not which business you're paying.

Can I pay paybill from a business M-PESA account?

Yes. Business till numbers, Pochi la Biashara wallets, and registered business M-PESA accounts can all initiate paybill payments. The same tariff structure applies.

How long does it take for paybill payments to reflect?

M-PESA confirmations are instant for both sender and receiver. However, some institutions' internal systems sync every 15-30 minutes, so your account balance may not update immediately.

Can I reverse a paybill payment sent to the wrong account?

Reversals are possible but not guaranteed. Immediately forward your M-PESA confirmation SMS to 234 or call Safaricom customer care at 100. Also contact the business directly.

Are paybill payments tax-deductible for businesses?

Yes. Businesses can claim paybill payments as legitimate expenses when supported by M-PESA statements and corresponding supplier invoices or receipts.

Can I use Fuliza to pay paybill if I don't have enough balance?

Yes, as long as your Fuliza limit can cover both the paybill amount and the transaction fee. Remember that Fuliza charges its own access fee and daily maintenance fees.

What's the difference between Paybill and Buy Goods?

Paybill requires an account reference number and is used for institutional payments. Buy Goods (Till) is for retail purchases and customers pay zero fees.

Why do some paybills ask for account number and others don't?

Businesses configure their paybill systems differently. Utilities like KPLC require your meter number. Schools need student IDs. Always follow the specific institution's instructions.
